So here are a few options Gray and I have talked about for this expansion. Most teams seem to agree it’s a good idea so let’s see which ideas people favor.
Options:
1) Expand MiLB rosters from 20 to 25 this offseason (2018-2019) ultimately creating a little extra space for the Low Minors from last years draft.
2) Expand MiLB rosters from 20 to 25 next offseason (2019-2020)
3) Expand MiLB rosters incrementally over the next couple of seasons- from 20 to 22 in 2018-2019 and then from 22 to 25 in 2019-2020
Or instead of beginning the incrementally expansion this offseason we could begin it the following offseason.
Thoughts? We figured teams may want time to prepare for the expansion and may have acquired more picks if they had known.

Honestly still would be in favor of not making any changes (did we have a formal vote for this?). If we need to do it, let's do it incrementally.

This is not a formal vote yet, we have to decide on what is the best way to expand the rosters and then we will have a formal vote to pass the proposal to expand.

I think option 2 is best.

Option 3 seems to give us the time to see if it will work so I will go with that one.

I vote for number 3,and am offering this idea.
First only allow minor league additions during the off season draft. It will increase the value of the minor leaguers and the draft pick, instead of an owner just adding players during the year it kind of devalues the pick. Plus if your a top team your going to be picking last so just add your minor leaguers then. A team that finishes last their pick is going to be worth more than a team that finishes first. Now if that team wants to trade that pick it will have more value because of the lower it will be in the pecking order. So by going with choice 3 it splits the 5 players into 2 off seasons so how about this, those two picks that would be for this offseason give them to the owners August 1,we give out those picks and hold a 2 round draft(after Aug. 13th) with the players who are currently in the minors. No one from the recent June draft would be eligible until the offseason draft. This would benefit two ways one those teams that seem to have gotten lost, will have to be paying attention to know what's going on especially to add players.
The second thing you can also use them as trade chips. deadline is 12 days away, so let's say Oakland needs a catcher and comes to me about Sal Perez, now I building for the future have my eye on some prospects and some minor league free agents, can say include your two picks, he says yes and I'm now adding 2 extra minor leaguers in in 12 days plus my own picks. So 4 minor leaguers plus whatever else before I even go into the off season. Use the same standing from 2018 for draft order. To me it seems like it would increase the value of the draft picks and I believe the whole idea behind the expansion of minor leaguers was to benefit the owners who are building and this way nothing is really changing just putting in a new wrinkle for this one year.

Cleveland, that’s an interesting idea I just think that would be hard to implement and keep up with.

I have no issue with any of the 3 options above. I would make a decision if forced to.

I admit to being completely biased in picking option 1. If not that, I think option 3 over 2 because there is no sense in delaying it for a season.
I like the in-season pick up system as we have it now. It can work to anyone's advantage if they put in the research. Sorry Cleveland, but I think it sounds a little complicated, plus given how many players are picked up during the season not very reasonable

Cincy it's not that complicated, I will break it down, If we pick option 3 we will be adding 2 additional players minor leaguers this off season. I suggested we get those draft picks on opening day and we can either use them as a trade chips during the season up until the trade deadline.
If you don't trade them then you can use them during the 2 round draft.
Now not allowing teams to add players during the season increases the value of the pick.
Lets say next year 4 top prospects all emerge all minor league free agents.
Now let's use this years order, gepetto's team picks first, so next year we all know those players are out there and gepetto needing a few players can offer that pick in any deal. The fact that none of us can sign those players without that pick increases the value for gepetto and he can build his team quicker.
You say with the minor leaguers added it's not reasonable, so let's say 4 prospects do emerge during this particular time.
Aug 8, 2018 19:56:50 GMT -5 Cincinnati Reds said: I will be out of town for the next 2 weeks. 8/10-8/24. I may or may not be able to check on the team at all. Just letting you know, talk to you guys when I get back.
And they get signed by Oakland, Boston, LA Dodgers and Texas(picked them because of their better) record.
You return on the 24th find them all gone find teams with better records got them, what good is your 4th overall pick then.
It's only an idea for 1 season, with keeping people involved in mind.

Ken, I like your idea it does seem like there is a lot of thought behind it and it could be interesting, if that option is picked I hope that is implemented. I like option 2 for only this reason, I think knowing your getting extra picks would change the way you trade, and if owners knew they had them this year, it could've effected their dealings, going into next season knowing that I think would be fair for all.
