There may be a rule on this, but I might have missed it. When do the contracts roll over to next year? Let's say you don't make the playoffs. Can you drop a player during the playoffs and have the main and biggest salary hit still count for a "year" you aren't even competing in still?

I think at end of season that's when the contracts roll over after you make your roster decisions.

September 20th 11:59 PM EST - Free Agency Closes. No more auctions may be started. Existing auctions run to conclusion. Buyouts Close. Minor League Transactions close.
October 2nd 12:00 AM EST - New season begins, Contracts decrement by one year. Each team has a fresh set of Club-options. FA, UFA, ARB, QO decisions can be made. 2020 Draft picks available. Promotions/Demotions activated. Minor League Drops activated.
